A variety of technology companies and standards organizations have formed the Metaverse Standards Forum to encourage the development of interoperable metaverse...s.
"Open to any organization at no cost," the forum says on its website(Opens in a new window), "the Metaverse Standards Forum provides a venue for cooperation between standards organizations and companies to foster the development of interoperability standards for an open and inclusive metaverse, and accelerate their development and deployment through pragmatic, action-based projects."
So far 37 organizations have joined the Metaverse Standards Forum. That includes standards organizations such as the World Wide Web Consortium, Khronos Group, and the XR Association; gaming companies such as Sony Interactive Entertainment, Unity, and Epic Games; and tech companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, and the company formerly known as Facebook.
The Metaverse Standards Forum says in a press release(Opens in a new window) that its actions "will be directed by the needs and interests of its members and may involve diverse technology domains such as 3D assets and rendering, human interface and interaction paradigms such as AR and VR, user created content, avatars, identity management, privacy, and financial transactions."
But despite its name, the forum won't develop any standards on its own. Instead, the group says on its website that it "will coordinate requirements and resources to foster the creation and evolution of standards within standards organizations working in relevant domains," effectively serving as a go-between for companies building metaverse products and standards bodies.
