New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation have finally announced Max release date for the latest installment to the blockbuster fantasy franchise. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film still managed to garner a positive score from the audience with a Popcornmeter rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, it tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.”
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be available for streaming starting on Friday, February 28. It will then be followed by its broadcast debut on HBO on Saturday, March 1. The voice cast features Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan; Gaia Wise as his daughter Héra; Luke Pasqualino as Wulf; and Miranda Otto as she reprises her iconic role as Éowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan from The Lord of the Rings. The latter serves as the tale’s narrator.
The animated prequel was directed and produced by Blade Runner: Black Lotus’ Kenji Kamiyama from a screenplay written by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, based on the revered books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Additional cast members include Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna and Janine Duvitski.
