The Last of Us Part 2 will be split into multiple TV seasons

Given the phenomenal success of HBO’s The Last of Us TV show, which concluded this past weekend, all eyes are turned to the future seasons and how long that success can be continued. Even though there’s just two games, the plan is for more than two seasons with plans to break up the story from the video game The Last of Us Part 2 into multiple seasons.

This was revealed by co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin in an interview with GQ. When asked if The Last of Us season 2 would feature the entirety of the second game, Mazin said, “No. No way.” Druckmann added, “It’s more than one season”.

Would that mean a full run of three seasons or even four? Mazin said, “You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.”

Naturally the pair are being rather coy about what their plans for the show are, but players of the video games will know already that The Last of Us Part 2 plays around with flashbacks, different time periods and has distinct narrative arcs that could certainly be split into multiple seasons and expanded upon.

We also know the kinds of backlash that the game’s creators received for certain narrative choices, so… yeah, that’s probably going to be a whole thing all over again.

One other thing we do know is that Season 2 will likely ramp up the dangers that are posed by the infected. Through The Last of Us Season 1, Joel, Ellie and the other human survivors generally only faced infected in small numbers, leaning into the more human drama, as is so often the case with this post-apocalyptic genre. That’s in contrast to the tens of infected and clickers you might deal with at a time in the game, with an overall kill count easily in the hundreds.
