When the Ghostbusters cross the wrong spirits, their deaths find them end in the afterlife where one of their members flips one of the franchises' most memorable lines. When the Ghostbusters interfere with mob business from beyond the grave, the undead gangsters retaliate with one possessed and the other members murdered in front of the Firehouse. While their bodies float inside the Ecto-1 at the bottom of the East River, their spirits search the afterlife where they continue to oppose their newest enemies' efforts with the special help of Peter Venkman whose unique status has made him like a god, in a spiritual sense of course.
In Ghostbusters: Other Side the Ghostbusters interrupt a meeting between two rival gangs where a mob enforcer forcibly takes over Peter's body. While the spirit fails to negotiate the release of any trapped crew members, Peter's displaced spirit disappears elsewhere and leaves his body non-responsive when the ghost makes a premature exodus. In their pursuit to understand the situation and save their absent teammate, the Ghostbusters are tricked into a trap where they are killed by a battalion of armed spirits, led by the same ghost who possesses Peter's body yet again. Ray, Egon, and Winston end up in purgatory where their reputation precedes them as they are pursued by angry spirits acting on the orders of others. When they appear to face the wrath of a literal demon, they are saved last minute by Peter who showcases abilities unlike anything he was capable of before.
