Netflix releases the first look at Rustin, starring Colman Domingo. The upcoming movie tells the story of Bayard Rustin, a pivotal but unsung figure in the civil rights movement. Rustin will follow his life of activism, namely his involvement in the March on Washington in 1963 where Dr. Martin Luther King made his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Higher Ground Productions, founded by former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, is producing the film after signing a multi-year deal with Netflix with the goal of promoting diverse voices in the entertainment industry. President Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
The first look of Domingo as Rustin has now been released by Netflix, showing him speaking with both fists in the air. Domingo appears in Rustin’s signature glasses with the crowd cheering around him, previewing the recreation of the hero's speeches and activism to come in the movie. Check it out below:

Joining Domingo in the Rustin cast, Aml Ameen, known for The Maze Runner and Kidulthood, will play Martin Luther King Jr., with Chris Rock, Bill Irwin, CCH Pounder, and several other actors also part of the movie. Known for his extensive theater work and helming movies like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, George C. Wolfe will direct Rustinwith a script co-written with Dustin Lance Black, whose screenplay for Milkstarring Sean Penn won an Oscar. An exact release date for Rustin is still unknown, but it's expected to debut in 2023.
