A piece of fan art has seen characters from The Flash placed in a poster for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With the popularity of comic book movies looking unlikely to fade for the foreseeable future, it seems the developing trend of the sub-genre is a fixation on the multiverse. DC are delving into this concept in their upcoming film, The Flash, the first solo film featuring Ezra Miller in the titular role. The marketing of the film has made clear that the film will adapt elements of Geoff Johns’s “Flashpoint” storyline, which saw Barry Allen use his super speed to time travel and break the barriers between different universes. The key signifier of this has been the inclusion of Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne as Barry seemingly travels to the version of the DC Universe seen in Tim Burton’s seminal Batman movies.
Conversely, Phase 4 of the MCU has been explicitly delving into the multiverse and the realm of possibilities it can bring. Alternate timelines and “variants” of classic characters were established in the Disney+ show Loki, and followed up on in the anthology series What If…?. Last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home then elevated the multiverse concept to a meta level, including several characters from prior Spider-Man film series, including Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as visitors from other dimensions. Now, it looks as if Marvel is about to go even further with this concept in Doctor Strange 2, which is heavily rumored to feature mind-blowing cameos as Stephen Strange ventures through the multiverse.
