The Fairphone 5 is now available and claiming the title of "most sustainable smartphone in the world."
It has been a couple of years since the Fairphone 4 launched with a complete hardware refresh and continued focus on sustainability. According to Miquel Ballester Salvà, head of product management at Fairphone, the development team spent the last two years making the Fairphone 5 "faster, thinner, but more importantly, fairer in every way possible."
The end result is an Android smartphone with the following spec:

The Fairphone 5 runs Android 13 with "zero bloatware" and the promise of eight years of software support alongside a five-year warranty. That includes a guarantee of at least five major Android OS updates until 2031. The 4,200mAh battery will give you "32 hours of daily use" and recharge 50% in 20 minutes. It's also easy to replace.
The sustainability aspect of the Fairphone 5 comes from a combination of features. It's manufactured using more than 70% fair or recycled materials and is 100% e-waste neutral. That means for every 212 gram Fairphone 5 made, the company responsibly collects and recycles 212 grams of electronic waste. Finally, it's a modular phone meaning you can replace all of the parts yourself, including individual cameras or the USB-C port.
