The Black Phone is a 2021 supernatural horror movie that is directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Doctor Strange). Starring Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, the film made approximately $161.4 million at the global box office off of an estimated $16-18 million budget.
Universal officially announced that a sequel to The Black Phone was in development in October 2023. The movie was originally scheduled to arrive in theaters in June 2025, though it was then pushed back by roughly four months to October.
Now, Derrickson has announced that filming has officially begun on The Black Phone 2. He shared a behind-the-scenes photo on X, which can be viewed below, which gives fans their first glimpse at the logo for the forthcoming horror sequel.

Hawke will reprise his role in The Black Phone 2. Also returning are Mason Thames as Finney, Madeleine McGraw as Gwen, Jeremy Davies as Terrence, and Miguel Mora as Robin. Demián Bichir has additionally joined the cast.
C. Robert Cargill once again wrote the script for The Black Phone 2 alongside Derrickson. Official plot details remain under wraps at this time.
“Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use,” the official synopsis reads. “When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.”
The Black Phone 2 will be released in United States theaters on October 17, 2025, for Universal Pictures. The Black Phone, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Starz.
