A fan animation for The Batman sees the new Batmobile glide through the rainy streets of a neo-noir Gotham. Matt Reeves’ take on the Batman mythos has been not only a box office hit but incredibly well received by critics and audiences who are lauding Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader as the best yet. While a sequel has yet to be confirmed, this success implies this new version will be here to stay, with a Penguin spin-off starring Colin Farrell already receiving the green light from HBO Max.
Despite being the third version of Batman in the last decade, the new film was able to differentiate itself from prior adaptations by focusing on the detective element of the character, which fans favorably compared to films such as David Fincher’s Se7en and Zodiac. Scenes of Batman and Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) investigating crime scenes to piece together The Riddler’s (Paul Dano) scheme were hailed by fans as a refreshing change of pace, not just for Batman movies but for the entire superhero sub-genre. This was punctuated with the inclusion of grounded, gritty action sequences, the most notable of which was the chaotic car chase during the film’s second act in which The Penguin attempted to escape the clutches of the Batmobile.
