Danny DeVito praised Matt Reeves and Colin Farrell's take on comic villain the Penguin in The Batman but stated he prefers Tim Burton's approach. Farrell became the latest actor to portray the Gotham City crime boss opposite Robert Pattinson's Batman in the 2022 film. DeVito portrayed the character in Burton's 1992 sequel Batman Returns.
Before Farrell offered a glimpse at a younger, less experienced Oswald Cobblepot who's yet to ascend the hierarchy of Gotham's criminal underworld inThe Batman, the actor was last seen in live-action on the big screen in Batman Returns, portrayed by DeVito. A vastly different character from Farrell's, DeVito's Penguin is a violent, animalistic villain raised by penguins in Gotham's sewers after being abandoned as a child. Influenced by corrupt businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), DeVito's Cobblepot campaigns to run for mayor, facing Michael Keaton's Batman as he aims to enact a violent attack on Gotham. DeVito previously shared his excitement for Farrell's Penguin ahead of The Batman's release, and now has shared his reaction to Farrell and Reeves' approach to the villain and the Batman mythos.
