The Batman crafted a Gotham City like none before it and fixed one of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy's greatest mistakes. The Gotham City of The Batman was praised as a successful part of Matt Reeves' new take on the superhero. It had an identity of its own and felt almost like a character in its own right, something the Gotham of Nolan's movies lacked.
Gotham City acted as a playground for Robert Pattinson's Batman, as he chased the Riddler across the city, including a pivotal scene at the City Hall. The film was almost entirely shot at night and across multiple locations, most prominently Liverpool, England. However, some scenes were also filmed in Glasgow, London, and Chicago, as well as in a studio for certain shots. The Dark Knight trilogy also used multiple locations to create Gotham, including New York, London, and Chicago. However, like any film, several additional real-world locations were used as stand-ins for specific buildings, such as the use of University College London as a courtroom in Batman Begins.

Though they both used multiple locations to craft distinct versions of Gotham City, The Batman created a much better vision of the fictional dystopia from the Batman comics thanThe Dark Knight trilogy. The Gotham of Batman Begins managed to create its own identity, particularly due to the use of a distinct brown color palette to create The Narrows, Gotham's slum, as well as the unique monorail circulating the city. However, The Dark Knight did not feature these set pieces and seemed much more like a straight recreation of Chicago rather than Gotham.
