The Batman director Matt Reeves explains the creative reasoning behind Robert Pattinson's dramatic emo-style eyeliner. Reeves recently explained the thought process behind the dramatic eyeliner in an interview with Esquire. Some fans might've been surprised to see Bruce sporting the darker look, but Reeves said he was taken with the image it gives off. It speaks to the overall theatricality of Batman. He stated:
“You can’t wear a cowl and not wear that. All of the Batmen wear that. I just loved the idea of taking off [the mask] and under that there’s the sweating and the dripping and the whole theatricality of becoming this character.”
