The Avengers have exposed one of the biggest risks with the concept of the Multiverse that has become so ubiquitous in Marvel stories. With so many possibilities and new worlds to explore, creators are becoming too focused on different alternate realities, derailing the main plot that should drive stories for character like the Avengers.
The Multiverse has been one of the most prominent features in Marvel stories for a few years now. The idea itself offers infinite possibilities for expanding any franchise, and Marvel has been quick to capitalize on it. The Multiverse has been the focus of the Avengers' storylines for a while, since the Earth's Mightiest Heroes found themselves at the center of the machinations of two fearsome villains, Mephisto and a version of Doctor Doom who calls himself the Doom Supreme. These foes plan to conquer every Earth in the Multiverse by traveling back in time and killing the first version of the planet's defenders, the Prehistoric Avengers. While this is the overarching plot, much focus has been devoted to exploring these different versions of Earths, each with its own unique features and characters.

This kaleidoscope of worlds and different versions of familiar characters has given creators a lot of freedom but also carries an inherent risk. Avengers #57 by Jason Aaron, Javier Garròn, and David Curiel is completely dedicated to the story of the Soldier Supreme, a variant of Captain America and Doctor Strange, fighting against demonic forces in his own version of World War II.
