Star Wars tie-ins are hinting Count Dooku almost caused a schism in the Jedi after he left the Order. Tie-ins are gradually making Dooku's fall to the dark side even more momentous. Kiersten White's novel Padawan revealed Dooku had served on the Jedi Council, meaning his decision to quit the Order would have sent shockwaves through the Jedi. They were used to considering him a source of authority — and now he had chosen to abandon them, returning to his homeworld of Serenno and claiming his family title.
The short story «Resolve» by Alex Segura, published in the anthology book Stories of Jedi & Sith, hinted Dooku's fall was actually engineered by the Sith. It's interesting to note there are striking parallels between Palpatine and Dooku, two Force-sensitives who claimed positions of enduring political power and influence; this has led to some speculation that Darth Plagueis actually considered Dooku as a Sith Apprentice rather than Palpatine. No doubt he chose correctly — Dooku lacked the Machiavellian cunning that characterized Palpatine and would have failed to secure the revenge of the Sith. Still, Dooku's fall would have been considered a remarkable accomplishment, and evidence is building that he tried to cause an actual Jedi schism.

White's novel Padawan reveals Dooku was still welcomed on Coruscant, even serving as an adviser to the Jedi Council — which certainly explains why Mace Windu refused to believe ill of him in Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones.
