The Mad Titan, Thanos, is one of Marvel's most recognizable villains, but his complex nature means that he also saved the universe many times. On one of these occasions, faced with insurmountable odds against the power of Annihilus, Thanos' only chance was to use the teleporting powers of the mutant Nightcrawler. However, as with every plan concocted by Thanos, this one had a cost, and the beloved X-Men was transformed into a disgusting weapon.
The second Infinity Trilogy is the last set of Thanos's stories authored by the character's creator, Jim Starlin. As it usually happens, Starlin's Thanos is more contemplative than ruthless, and he is depicted as an anti-hero who often has to save the universe from forces beyond mortals' understanding. This time, Thanos has to deal with two threats. One is Adam Warlock, or rather a version of him from a different reality that was completely annihilated and absorbed inside him, making him almost omnipotent. The other is Annihilus, the tyrant of the Negative Zone, who has evolved into his most powerful form and, spurred by the machinations of the demon Mephisto, is launching another invasion of the Positive Universe. Thanos has to leave the comforting embrace of his love, Mistress Death, who has finally accepted him after centuries of strife, in order to save her realm and, in the process, the entire Marvel Universe.
