Actor Sylvester Stallone is set to reprise his role as Ranger Gabriel Gabe Walker in a sequel to the 1993 action thriller Cliffhanger. Deadline was first to report.
The sequel will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen, Snitch) and produced by Neal H. Moritz's Original Film, Stallone and Braden Aftergood's Balboa Productions, and Rocket Science. Casting for other roles is currently underway.
«Growing up with the biggest action films of the '80s and '90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true,» Waugh said in a statement. «It's going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don't take lightly.»
While details about the plot of the sequel have not been disclosed, the film will continue the story of the original, which saw Walker try to rescue a group of stranded hikers who turn out to be violent criminals searching for a missing $100 million following a plane crash. The film, which grossed over $255 million worldwide, was directed by Renny Harlin and starred Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, and Janine Turner.
In addition to the Cliffhanger sequel, Stallone reprises his role as Ravager Captain Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (which hits theaters on May 5) and also appears in the latest installment of the Expendables franchise (due out in September). He also stars in the crime drama series Tulsa King, and will appear with his family in the docuseries The Family Stallone on Paramount+.
