The recently eliminated Survivor 42 castaway Marya Sherron has revealed that she thinks that if she avoided elimination, Maryanne Oketch would have gone home instead. After a postponed 41st and 42nd season, the latest installment of castaways is eager to outwit, outplay, and outlast their fellow competitors. Featuring a 26-day cycle, the latest castaways need to sway the game quicker than ever, raising the stakes even further to win the million-dollar prize. The latest two seasons introduced a few twists to the game. The updates include Beware Advantages and the Shot in the Dark, a «Hail Mary» tactic used when a player knows they'll be eliminated that allows them a one in six chance of staying in the game.

Marya entered the game seeking closure for the death of her brother Kious Kelly, the first nurse in NYC to die due to COVID-19 in March 2020. Donning a necklace with her brother's image, Marya explained that she wished to bury the necklace on the island as a tribute to her brother. Marya ultimately decided to forgo the burial, seeking closure outside of the game. On day five, Marya became the third castaway to go home after Jackson Fox was medically evacuated and Zach Wurtenberger was eliminated on day three.
