Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for Severance.
Severance creator Dan Erickson had a much darker vision for the series in the original script for the pilot episode, and it contains major clues regarding why Lumon Industries keeps baby goats inside the Severed Floor. Out of the various mysteries, unanswered questions, and headscratchers in Severance, none are as strange as Lumon's room of adorable baby goats. That room has prompted various fan theories ranging from animal testing to occult rituals in Lumon's creepy basement. Thanks to the pilot episode script, these theories may soon be laid to rest.
The script (via TVwriting.com) reads like an alternate reality version of Severance, revealing how much the series has developed from Erickson's original vision. In the script, innie Mark is born naked on a table in the Severed Floor, Helly gets severed before Mark, and the Severed Floor feels closer to a traditional office. The script also includes scenes of outie Mark being recruited by Harmony Cobel for the job. In one of these scenes, Harmony reveals a black rat that's been implanted with Lumon Industries' proprietary Severance Chip.

She then flips a small switch, which causes the rat to instantly calm down and allow Harmony to pick it up. Harmony explains that once the chip inside the rat's brain is activated, it “can only access memories from when it was on,” a crash course on the capabilities of the Severance Chip.
