Severance creator Dan Erickson explains why season 1 ends on such a massive cliffhanger. Last week, the slow-build of Severance season 1 reached a shocking crescendo in the season 1 finale episode “The We We Are.” At last, the innies became the outies as the show’s quartet of rebellious Lumon office workers unhatched their scheme to hijack the overtime contingency and find out the truth about their real lives.
Dylan of course already caught a glimpse of his outie existence when Milchick briefly switched on his severed self, allowing him to meet his child. With a waffle-filled Dylan back at the office keeping his hands on the switches, “The We We Are” at last allowed Mark, Helly and Irving to emerge outside the office themselves, with enlightening and even traumatizing results. The truth would prove particularly stunning in the cases of Helly and Mark, with the former discovering her identity as a member of the all-powerful Eagan family, and the latter finding out that the wellness counselor Ms. Casey is actually his supposedly-dead wife Gemma. The stunning moment for audiences however came when Milchick finally got to Dylan inside the control room, bringing an end to the scheme and dropping the curtain abruptly on season 1.

The unspooling of all these long-awaited Severance revelations indeed made for a gripping episode of television. But the episode’s massive cliffhanger ending unfortunately left many fans feeling frustrated and even a little angry. Speaking to EW, Severance creator Erickson discussed the thought process that went into the controversial decision to end season 1 on such a teasing note:
