It was apparent in the early seasons of Sister Wives that Kody Brown didn't like his daughter Mykelti's partner Tony Padron. It can be argued that Kody has pretty good interpersonal skills since he communicates with many different spouses on a daily basis. Kody is also surrounded by 18 children, all with different temperaments. This led many to assume Kody can get along with pretty much anyone.
The theory was proven wrong when Christine and Kody's daughter Mykelti introduced her choice of a future spouse. From the get-go, Kody seemed standoffish, as viewers wondered why he didn't approve of his daughter's union. Tony was only the second in law to marry into the Brown family. However, viewers couldn't help but notice the friction between the two men when they were forced to interact.

Mykelti was only 20 years old when she married Tony. The young age would scare any parent since marriage is such a big commitment. The biggest issue Kody seemed to have with the marriage was the fact that Tony was immature, with the patriarch claiming the couple didn't understand how real life worked. At the time of the wedding, many Sister Wives viewers felt Tony was acting entitled, but in reality, he was trying his best to stand up for his future wife. The main source of contention between the two men seemed to circle around a comment made about taking out a second mortgage on the home after Kody revealed he was worried about paying for two weddings. At the time, Tony told the cameras, “I really don’t know what Kody means by ‘it would clobber him.’ I guess financially — but there’s a way around that. I mean, you can get a loan against your house."
