Will Smith says he'd love to see the Ayer Cut of 2016's Suicide Squad released. Smith portrayed Deadshot in the film, who teamed up with a group of supervillains, including Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, and Boomerang, to take down a bigger threat under the watchful eye of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag. Jared Leto played Suicide Squad's Joker in a divisive performance that many insiders have argued never got a fair shake, due to the part being heavily edited down. Suicide Squad was directed by David Ayer and was a commercial success for Warner Bros., although the version released to theaters was significantly altered and varied greatly from what Ayer had originally delivered.
The reasons for the pre-release edits came on the heels of critical reception to Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was also a massive hit commercially, but a critical disaster. This caused Warner Bros. to flinch when Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad was reportedly more akin to his darker, more violent sensibilities. The studio re-edited the film to be more like Fox's Deadpool (but with a PG-13 rating), rather than the hard-edged take of Ayer's original cut. Since its release, fans have clamored to see the so-called Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, causing the #ReleaseTheAyerCut hashtag to trend multiple times over.
