In the penultimate StrangerThings season 4, a massive story effort resulted in two episodes, in particular, becoming incredibly lengthy. The wildly successful Netflix show is reaching its endgame as it returns to the platform after three years. Stranger Things season 4 is set to follow the primary residents of Hawkins, Indiana (current and former) as they face a new threat from the Upside Down. After the Battle at Starcourt Mall, the heroes split into different locations and must also contend with high school, Russian prisons, and other mysteries.
With much of the central action outside of Hawkins in the upcoming episodes and the show's epic story coming to a close in season 5, Stranger Things season 4 will attempt to tie together numerous threads in anticipation of the grand finale. The locations, reveals, and additional cast members make season 4 the biggest one yet, meaning that the Duffer Brothers had to overstuff episodes to fit in all of the critical elements. In fact, Stranger Things season 4 is nearly twice as long as any other season, with two episodes eating up a lot more runtime than others.

Collider spoke to the Duffer Brothers about their production process and confirmed the length of season 4's episodes seven and nine. The Stranger Things creators say that the entries amount to "full-blown movies" and had to request an additional episode from Netflix due to the sheer amount of content they had planned.
