Netflix’s Stranger Things has no shortage of antagonists, supernatural or human, but a small detail from season 3 reveals the series also has a secret recurring villain in its midst. While Stranger Things’ scale has grown substantially since Hawkins’ more humble days in season 1, the series has been excellent at bringing back minor characters to maintain its small-town feel. In doing so, Stranger Things has revealed that it has its own real-world villain in terms of the younger kids’ social world.
Stranger Things season 1 only had one main supernatural villain: The Demogorgon. The rest were all humans who posed various levels of threats to the main characters. Trevor and James were the bullies of the party while Tommy H. and Carol were antagonists for Jonathan and Nancy, though all of their villain roles concluded after season 1. Since then, the villains of Stranger Things have almost exclusively been connected to the supernatural conflicts at hand, with even Billy’s Stranger Things character arc ending after he had been fully controlled by the Mind Flayer.

In Stranger Things season 3, Eleven and Max take a trip to Starcourt Mall in which the latter character introduces El to the world of shopping and goofing off in public, where the girls encounter a familiar face from school, Stacey Albright. When Max and El fell over while trying on heels, Stacey and her snobby friends leered at the girls with very judgmental looks. Later on, Max and Eleven see the girls at the food court, with El using her powers to make Stacey’s drink explode in her face, giving her a form of embarrassing teenage justice.
