Stranger Things’ season 4 finale, “The Piggyback,” featured several incredible improvisations by the cast, each of which strengthened the power of their storylines. Considering most of Stranger Things’ season 4 cast has now spent over six years with their characters, the actors arguably understand their roles better than anybody. As such, it’s not surprising that four of the most touching or heartbreaking moments in the California, Russia, Creel House, and Upside Down storylines of Stranger Things’ season 4 finale weren’t originally in the script.
In Stranger Things season 4’s ending, the Hawkins gang geared up to fight Vecna by using Max as bait while the others attacked him through the Upside Down. While the California gang (Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle) helped Eleven use her powers to “piggyback” on Max’s happy memories, Hopper, Joyce, and Murray killed the Demodogs and Demogorgon in Russia to hurt the hive mind, and Eddie and Dustin distracted the Demobats so Robin, Nancy, and Steve could attack Vecna’s physical form, Lucas and Erica watched Max as she was put under Vecna’s trance yet again. In the end, Max’s plan to defeat Vecna didn’t work, with Sadie Sink’s character briefly dying before being brought back to life by Eleven. At the same time, Eddie Munson sacrificed himself in the Upside Down in order to buy time and save Hawkins.
