A new behind-the-scenes Stranger Things season 4 video details Vecna's cool special effects prosthetics and makeup. Set six months after the Battle of Starcourt in season 3, the teenage heroes of Hawkins, Indiana, once again face off against an evil presence from the alternate dimension known as the Upside Down. This time, a terrifying telepathic being known as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) haunts and terrorizes his victims before brutally killing them with his mind powers. Revealed to be Henry Creel, Dr. Brenner's (Matthew Modine) first patient of his diabolical experiments on young children, he was forced into the Upside Down by Eleven during a telekinetic battle. The fight, coupled with his subsequent inter-dimensional travel, transformed his body into a monstrous and hideous form.
Stranger Things creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, wanted to utilize as much practical effects as possible when creating Vecna. This was to simulate the effects that were featured prominently in '80s science-fiction and horror films, as well as to give an imposing presence for the young actors to react to during their scenes. Vecna's costume was so effective that Bower actually scared his co-star Millie Bobby Brown during their Mind Lair scenes, causing the young actor to burst into tears when she first saw him. According to Bower, it took over seven hours a day to have his makeup and full prosthetics applied.
