Starfield will be updated later this year with 'new ways to travel', said Bethesda a while ago, though the developers haven't shared any specifics yet. In the meantime, an enterprising group of modders called Tau.Ceti Voidworks have announced their plan to introduce flyable jet fighters to the sci-fi roleplaying game.
Here's what they said on Reddit:
Having small fighter craft in the game seems to be quite the popular request. We know we'd enjoy it, too. So we've decided to add it to our list of projects.
So far we're very much in the development stage and figuring out scale and the most basic parts, like; How do we want to split a design into buildable parts? How much can we scale down for use? Can we do hangar for regular ships? And many other basic, but challenging questions. Very early stages so far.
It's an ambitious endeavor to be sure, especially since Bethesda hasn't shared the mod tools with the public just yet (though they are expected to in the not-too-distant future). Fans have certainly longed to use vehicles when roaming planets, though jets are perhaps a bit overkill considering that there are cell boundaries for each area where players can land. Something like helicopters or even just land rovers would be better.
Anyway, you can follow the development of this Starfield mod via Discord and/or support the Tau.Ceti Voidworks modding team on Patreon. There's another upcoming mod that seeks to introduce playable mechs, by the way. This one was already demonstrated, so it might launch sooner than the jet mod.
Later this week, Bethesda is set to deliver beta testing for the next Starfield patch. Highlights include various quest fixes, improved lighting and character faces, and another fix for the asteroids following player ships.
