Star Wars: The Old Republic is opening up its first Asia-Pacific server today. The cloud-based server, Shae Vizla, will begin opening to subscribers today for an exclusive 24 hour window, and for all tomorrow.
The decision to launch the new server came after previously opening the Shae Vizla test server as a trial run for the eventual cloud migration of all the game's servers, and to see if an APAC server might be a good addition. This should improve performance for those in the Asia-Pacific region. The testing began back in april, and executive producer Keith Kanneg announced the opening while also emphasizing the work that went into opening the first server in the APAC region.
Since this is a new server, it won't support transfers for a while, meaning that this is a fresh start for all players who roll characters on it for the time being. Subscribers can start on the new server at 1:00 p.m. CT today for an exclusive 24-hour period before the server opens to all players tomorrow, November 17th at 1:00 p.m. CT. This is designed to let subscribers have a first shot at getting their preferred character and guild names and to get going on their new server home.
The team promises to monitor the new server, keep an eye on the economy, and make sure everything gets off to a good start. This approach will allow players in the region to enjoy the improved performance as well as to, in some cases, benefit from a fresh start for both returning players who might feel more comfortable on this regional server and even new players who would benefit from the completely fresh start.
To mark the new launch, there will be devs out on the server to join the community during the launch period.
