Star Wars Outlaws is the biggest and most significant release Ubisoft has planned for this year, and it certainly looked impressive in its first showings back in June. In a new preview published by Kotaku, more brief details have been revealed on the action-adventure title’s open world setting and what players can expect from it.
According to narrative director Navid Khavari, Star Wars Outlaws’ core gameplay loop will be comprised of three distinct tones, with “dense” and “bustling” cities, “vast, mysterious, and stunning” open environments (which will presumably be less dense), and protagonist Kay’s ship, which players will use to traverse seamlessly throughout the game’s galactic setting.
“The first of these is dense cities bustling with activity and lively cantinas where you might find criminal syndicates and corrupt Imperials mingling together,” Khavari said. “Second is our vast, mysterious, and stunning open environments… whether on foot or Kay’s speeder. And finally, space, which players can explore on Kay’s ship.
“One of the core parts of the scoundrel fantasy is having your own ship and that essentially being your home. Outlaws are travelling constantly and need to be on the move all the time—that’s no different for Kay. You’ll be able to go from on foot, to speeder, to your ship and easily jump between planets.”
Previously, developer Massive Entertainment has said that each planet in Star Wars Outlaws (of which there will supposedly be quite a few) will be about as large as 2-3 zones in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. That said, it’s also supposedly not going to be an overly long and bloated experience, if that’s something you’re fretting about.
Star Wars Outlaws is out in late 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
