Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen always imagined the story of Cal Kestis as a trilogy, which is probably only natural, considering the immortal format of the mainline Star Wars movies.
Speaking on IGN Unfiltered, Asmussen reveals that sequel discussions were happening before the original game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, launched in 2019. He says that «we were already talking about the second game. „I mean, frankly, we were talking beyond. And these are conversations that, when we're breaking this story with Lucasfilm, it's like: 'Well, where are we going with the second game?'
Something as massive as a new game set in the Star Wars universe doesn't get off the ground unless plans are made for the future, and Asmussen notes that this larger scope aligned with his own ideas, recalling that he “always wanted to see this as a trilogy» and that «we had a pretty decent idea of timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there are ideas of what we could do beyond that as well.»
It seems that whatever direction a potential third Star Wars: Jedi title could go in, it would be a more ambitious undertaking, at least from a technical perspective. Asmussen signals that «it's a pretty safe assumption» a third game would be built using Unreal Engine 5, as opposed to Survivor's Unreal Engine 4.
