The ending of Revenge Of The Sith was a cathartic moment for audiences of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Seeing the galaxy’s two strongest Force users battle each other on-screen was something which many fans had been looking forward to but, while their fight was certainly dramatic, many viewers thought it seemed short-lived. It appeared as if Yoda admitted defeat far too readily, seemingly making a snap decision to leave and go into exile. Some critics noted that he could probably have gone back to take down Palpatine, arguing that it felt like he didn’t even try. However, one key moment in that battle gives away the real reason for Yoda’s decision.

During their confrontation in the Senate Chamber, Palpatine throws lightning at Yoda, knocking away his lightsaber. Yoda catches the lightning with both hands and is almost overwhelmed, struggling to hold it back. Then there’s a brief shot of Yoda’s face. It’s perhaps the only time Yoda is ever shown to be truly angry, even with a hint of hatred for his opponent. He harnesses that emotion to release Palpatine’s Force lightning in a vicious blast, powerful enough to throw both of them off their feet. That brief moment is the closest Yoda ever comes to behaving like a Sith.
