Squid Game star HoYeon Jung shares how she reacted to the show, revealing she apologized to series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk upon seeing the series. Jung portrayed Kang Sae-byeok in the Netflix South Korean survival drama series. Hwang's series quickly became one of the platform's most-watched shows of all time following its September 2021 release.
In Squid Game, Jung's character was also known as Player 067 in the series' titular games, where people compete in twisted versions of childhood games for an incredible fortune. Sae-byeok is a North Korean defector who hopes to use the fortune to help transport her parents across the border and get her brother out of an orphanage, before buying a home for her family to start a new life. Sae-byeok joins forces with Player 456, Seong Gi-hun, in hopes of surviving through many of the game's deadly challenges. While Sae-byeok's unfortunate fate may not allow her to returnfor the hit series' second season, Jung has shared how she reacted to the series initially.

As part of THR's TV Drama Actress Roundtable uploaded to YouTube, Jung was asked about her expectations before the series launched, and whether she had to prepare for its surprise success. Jung admitted that while she didn't do anything to prepare, she felt she hadn't done her best in her performance. Due to this, Jung messaged Hwang following the first screening of the series that she took part in ahead of the series premiere ahead of the cast, apologizing to him and thanking him for casting her.
