George R. R. Martin reveals how Stan Lee influenced him to write shocking deaths in Game of Thrones. First airing in 2011 on HBO, Game of Thrones quickly became a major hit, introducing audiences to the vast fantasy land of Westeros and the deadly power struggles between its inhabitants over the coveted Iron Throne. Based on Martin's book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones ultimately ran until season 8, coming to a conclusion in 2019.
Throughout its eight-season run, Game of Thrones shocked viewers with a variety of character deaths. The show became known for its unflinchingly brutal treatment of beloved characters, never shying away from punishing those who made poor decisions. While season 3's infamous «Red Wedding» saw the deaths of Robb (Richard Madden), Talisa (Oona Chaplin), and Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), is perhaps the most well-known example of Game of Thrones' shocking deaths, the show featured numerous surprising demises throughout its run. This included Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), the Viper (Pedro Pascal), and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

In a new interview with The Independent, Martin explains that it was Lee, the famed Marvel comics writer, who in part inspired him to write shocking deaths into Game of Thrones. Martin cites Wonder Man from Avengers #9 in 1964 as one of his primary influences. The author notes that, although the hero became a villain, he ultimately made the decision not to betray the Avengers before then dying unexpectedly.
