The streaming service took to Twitter to announce the news, and then relayed a written message from Hwang that thanks fans and also has some teases on what to expect from Season 2.

«It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,» wrote Hwang. «But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular series ever… Gi-hun returns. The front man returns. The man in the suit ddakji might be back. You also will be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.»
In an interview published in May, Hwang said that the sophomore season could arrive by the end of 2023 or 2024. Season 1 ended in a dramatic fashion, and while the show doesn't necessarily need a second season, it was such a massive hit that it's no surprise to learn the show is coming back. In January this year, Netflix management confirmed that Squid Game would «absolutely» return for Season 2.
Hwang previously told Variety that he came up with the idea for Squid Game in 2008 when it was conceived as a film. However, Korean movie studios refused to finance it due to its violent themes.
Squid Game is a Korean survival drama about a group of people who are brought together to pay off their debts by taking part in a series of deadly games.
