A battle with Heaven's hunter, Angela, proved that Spawn's cloak is so much more powerful than fans realize. While Al Simmons was still learning about his superpowers and place within the war between Heaven and Hell, other forces conspired against him, either hoping to manipulate him for their own agendas or to eliminate his interference altogether. Al Simmons appeared on Earth five years after his death with limited memories, a severely scarred face, and new powers that allow him to fight a wide variety of foes ranging from Mafia thugs to actual demons like the Violator. After facing foes like the Mafia cyborg Overt-kill and serial killer Billy Kincaid, Al found brief rest and company among the unhoused denizens of Rat City, a labyrinth of alleys found within New York City. Despite his small victories, Spawn was still making sense of his past, his current status as a Hellspawn, and what his next move would be.

In Spawn #9 by writer Neil Gaiman and artist Todd McFarlane, Spawn was unsettled by his encounter with Count Nicholas Cogliostro, an older man who not only knew his real name but a lot about his unique situation. While Spawn questioned him, an Angel named Angela sought out this new Hellspawn, having received permission to hunt him as she had his predecessors for hundreds of years.
