The Mad Titan, Thanos, is one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe, even more powerful than the Hulk. The reason does not lie in mere physical might, however, but in Thanos' genius intellect and commitment which led him to improve his already impressive powers in many ways, including science and mysticism.

Thanos is an Eternal of Titan, the descendant of an offshoot of a race of immortal super-powered beings created by the godlike Celestials. Thanos, however, is also afflicted by Deviant syndrome, a genetic disposition that gave him a monstrous appearance but also the power to synthesize cosmic energy, which made him stronger than most Eternals. Growing up, Thanos became more and more detached from the peaceful Eternal society, eventually developing the morbid obsession with Death that defines Thanos.
