The Mad Titan, Thanos, is one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe, even more powerful than the Hulk. The reason does not lie in mere physical might, however, but in Thanos' genius intellect and commitment which led him to improve his already impressive powers in many ways, including science and mysticism.
Thanos is an Eternal of Titan, the descendant of an offshoot of a race of immortal super-powered beings created by the godlike Celestials. Thanos, however, is also afflicted by Deviant syndrome, a genetic disposition that gave him a monstrous appearance but also the power to synthesize cosmic energy, which made him stronger than most Eternals. Growing up, Thanos became more and more detached from the peaceful Eternal society, eventually developing the morbid obsession with Death that defines Thanos. Wanting to destroy his homeworld and then bring his nihilistic ambitions even further, Thanos started augmenting himself to obtain the powers that would make him unbeatable, a task that was made possible by his incredible intellect.

Thanos' journey of self-improvement began with bionic enhancements and "long hours of meditation" (according to The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Deluxe Edition), which made his Eternal powers grow and develop to a whole other level. Then, he went into space, traveling for years to gain experience, and he became a powerful warlord. During those years, Thanos further enhanced himself through "genetic manipulation" and "mysticism" (according to the All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z).
