In a recent interview promoting the upcoming release of The Batman, a question prompted him to regale co-star Zoe Kravitz about the legendary love triangle between Aerith Gainsborough, Tifa Lockhart, and Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7. He sounds like a loser, but that’s because he is, and he doesn’t care in the slightest.
When the iconic JRPG released back in 1997 it brought millions of people to their knees, and it seems the Twilight star was one of them. What I love the most is that this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the actor bring up Final Fantasy 7 while promoting his films, having previously talked about the heartbreak he felt upon Aerith’s death, expressing how it was one of the first times his heart truly felt broken.

Pattinson is an Aerith purist, a position I agree with, but then he quickly talks about how this innocent maiden is contrasted with a “sexy little thing” sporting a miniskirt and an attitude. He’s right, back in 1997 these were two fairly groundbreaking female characters in the genre even if they fell victim to some rather tiresome tropes. We’d seldom seen a romance developed to such an extent in video games before, with Pattinson even going on to reference the different spelling of Aerith’s name depending on the localisation you happened to be playing.
