The Batman is due to be the first of a new trilogy of superhero films, and the next movie is the perfect chance to redeem the most mishandled character in Batman's rogue gallery: Scarecrow. Scarecrow — or Jonathan Crane — has featured in three Batman films, all of them directed by Christopher Nolan. The character has been shortchanged on the big screen for the longest time, but the new tone and exciting direction of Matt Reeves' new Batman series may be the chance to see him reach the heights of his comic book counterpart.
Jonathan Crane was initially billed as the main villain of Batman Begins, before the reveal that Ra's Al Ghul is the real mastermind. The villain then turns up in the first ten minutes of The Dark Knight where he is quickly stopped by Batman during a drugs bust. Finally, he appears in The Dark Knight Rises as a makeshift judge after Bane's forces send the city into chaos. BeforeBatman Begins, the character was also rumored to appear in the next line of Tim Burton / Joel Schumacher Batman films, with Howard Stern attached to the role. However, DC and Warner Bros ultimately decided to reboot the franchise with Batman Begins, just as they have done again with The Batman.

The Batman's sequels are the perfect avenue to finally explore Scarecrow in-depth after he has been pushed to the sidelines in every film he has featured in. The new films are set to explore a vast selection of villains in Batman's rogues gallery, with The Batman focusing on the Riddler, Catwoman, and the Penguin.
