Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has generated an insane amount of hype amongst fans and newcomers to the franchise alike. The film series is clearly starting to reach towards the slightly more obscure references to the beloved games, and new fans might need a reintroduction to see what hardcore fans are so excited about.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was a landmark title for the long-suffering genre of video game movies, but much about the film changed details from its source material. The new film is bringing fan-favorite characters, reinventing old ones, and looking a lot more like the big screen adaptation fans were hoping for.

Movie-only fans first glimpsed the Master Emerald in the first full trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Jim Carrey's outstanding new look and performance as Dr. Robotnik was introduced with a line to his film-exclusive assistant Agent Stone. The mad doctor explains that he discovered a source of ultimate power while he was away from his homeworld. The trailer briefly depicts Eggman making his way into a massive structure and carefully acquiring the massive green stone. Later imagery shows off some fascinating design work in the mysterious room that once held the Master Emerald. Though that item is never referred to by name in any of the trailers thus far, big fans knew exactly which of the franchise's many glowing gems Eggman now has his hands on.
