The Sonic The Hedgehog sequel is less than two months away, and where better to remind people of that than the Super Bowl? If you don't like football and music, the ads that debut during the big game are the best part of the show. There was plenty to get excited about this year, including the Sonic ad which showed off a lot more Knuckles than we had seen up until now.
As was the case in the games when the two first met, Sonic and Knuckles are pitted against each other in the new movie. Perhaps the most exciting shot of the trailer, and maybe the most exciting shot we have seen of the movie so far, is the two of them colliding with a beautiful green chaos emerald in the background. The source of ultimate power, as Dr. Robotnik puts it.

Outside of a lot more Knuckles, the highlight of the ad was the gigantic Robotnik mech Sonic and Tails can be seen flying around. More evidence that the Eggman Jim Carrey will portray this time around will be much more like the Robotnik from the games. He has the look nailed down, of course, and will be using machines and weapons a lot like the ones he has been using to take down Sonic in video games for the past 30 years.
Between a more traditional Robotnik, an introduction to Knuckles rooted in Sonic 3 on the Mega Drive, and Tails piloting the plane from Sonic 2's Sky Chase Zone, there appears to be plenty for long-time Sonic fans to get excited about in the new movie. The first did a terrific job of appealing to those fans while also entertaining more casual Sonic fans, hence its success at the box office. Hopefully, the sequel has done the same.
