Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has said he’d like to make a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG one day.
The only RPG in Sega’s flagship franchise is 2008’s Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for Nintendo DS, but it was developed externally by Mass Effect studio BioWare.
During a recent interview with Good Vibes Gaming, Iizuka was asked if Sega might one day have another crack at releasing a Sonic RPG.
“Personally, I like role-playing games,” he responded. “The RPG game format is a lot of fun and I’ve even thought to myself, ‘you know, for the past 30 years we haven’t done a Sonic RPG’, and I’m questioning myself, ‘why haven’t we done a Sonic RPG in all this time? How have we gotten to 30 years with no RPGs?’
“So I’d like to hopefully work on a Sonic RPG at some point before I retire from Sega. But, you know, that’s just a dream right now, there are no concrete plans at this point.”
Sega will release Sonic X Shadow Generations on October 25, 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC.
A modern update of 2011’s Sonic Generations, the game will also include “a brand-new story campaign” starring Shadow as the playable character.
After going hands-on with the title at Summer Game Fest in June, VGC sat down Iizuka to discuss the changes made for this new version, as well as the current status of the Sonic franchise in general.
