Future Toy Story movies are almost inevitable at this point — Toy Story 5 is slated for June 19, 2026, by the way — but here’s one Pixar sequel we should have seen coming: The Incredibles 3, revealed to be in development out of the D23 Expo.
Pixar is the rare studio under the Disney banner to hold tight to a balance of original and franchised storytelling. The creative spark from the heydey of the 3D CG animation outfit is still alive in recent films like Soul, Turning Red, Luca, and the upcoming Hoppers, which makes exercises like Toy Story 4, Lightyear, and (the admittedly very good) Inside Out 2 all the much easier to give a pass. But Inside Out 2 still went on to make a billion-plus dollars to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time so… Pixar gonna make sequels.
Last February, Disney CEO Bob Iger professed to shareholders of The Walt Disney Company that he wasn’t going to sit there and let his studios get too original, especially with the conglomerate’s financials in a slump — the future would be sprinkled with sequels. Toy Story, Zootopia, and Frozen would all get new installments in the years to come. So you can understand how Pixar got to Incredibles 3.
But as always, the studio seems to be approaching the movie with its usual assiduousness. Brad Bird, who directed the two prior installments, is back. There’s no date for the movie, and few details. The difference afforded to Pixar and most franchise factories: time to get it right.
Hey, at least we’ll have an actual Fantastic Four movie to bide our time.
