QuakeCon has seen a particularly exciting announcement for fans of Doom, with id Software releasing official modding tools for Doom Eternal, the studio saying that they are “so impressed with the Doom Eternal community mods created without any official tools” and wanting to foster the burgeoning community.
The PC Mod Preview is now available as an opt-in beta via Steam, with a Microsoft Store option also coming soon – you will be able to play mods with the PC Game Pass version of the game. The PC Mod Preview gives players the ability to browse, download and play mods.
Separately, the idStudio Beta is available exclusively via Steam as an avenue for creators to create and publish their original mods, which will then be available to both Steam and Microsoft Store players. Opting in for the PC Mod Preview is pretty straightforward, using the established betas system in Steam:

For this to work, you will need to own Doom Eternal or have an active Game Pass subscription. Additionally, Bethesda suggest restarting your PC after registration to get the PC Mod Preview update to trigger, if you own and have the game already installed.
There’s a good bit of hype to the Doom franchise once again, with id Software announcing Doom: The Dark Ages back in June. Doom Eternal wrapped up the narrative arc from the 2016 reboot quite nicely, especially with the two DLC packs, so The Dark Ages will leap back in time to a previous war between the Slayer and the armies of Hell.
