The director of both live-action Sonic movies has said he would love to make a film based on Super Smash Bros but accepts it would be difficult to arrange.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Jeff Fowler was asked if, given Sonic’s presence in the more recent Smash Bros games, he’d ever be keen on directing a movie based on Nintendo‘s series.
“Nothing would make me happier than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros thing,” Fowler replied.
However, he also conceded that it wouldn’t be easy to greenlight, saying: “That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen.”
“Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That’s just classic,” Fowler added.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 arrives in North American cinemas today, having opened in 31 markets across Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand last week.
Paramount was reportedly “delighted” with the film’s opening weekend in those regions, which saw it gross $25.5 million.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprise success, with it becoming the top-grossing video game adaptation of all time in the US. Paramount Pictures and Sega revealed in February that a third Sonic film and a live-action TV series have entered production.
Toby Ascher, who was a producer on 2020’s Sonic film and the sequel, has said the plan is to create “a Sonic cinematic universe”.
VGC’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie review called it a much better film than the original and said there’s a pleasant surprise to be found in the chemistry between its new characters, which include Tails and Knuckles.
