Series co-creator Ed Boon hints that some main characters will skip Mortal Kombat 1, as the devs hope to "surprise" players. Speaking at Gamescom, Boon says that NetherRealm wants "some characters to have a break" in the upcoming game, suggesting that some series mainstays won't make the roster this time around.
This comes as fans beg for Jade and Sonya to make the starting roster, disappointed to see two leading ladies skip this first game in a new timeline. Boon's comments, however, suggest that not including them was a conscious decision, leaving room for lesser-used fighters to take their place.

Speaking with IGN at Gamescom, Boon discusses the thought process behind the main roster.
"We always have Scorpion, Sub Zero, Liu Kang, Raiden, Kitana, Mileena, [...] so we always want some characters to have a break," says Boon. "With starting over with Mortal Kombat 1 from the beginning, one of our goals was to have that surprise factor. 'Oh, I haven't seen Li Mei in forever. I haven't seen this character in forever.' So the 3D era is kind of our big agenda that we have there."
This is great news for 3D-era fans since it shows that we can expect more to be brought back. Yet it's bad news for the very dedicated Jade and Sonya supporters, who had hoped to get the pair in the main roster. So far, Sonya is just a kameo fighter, and Jade is only mentioned in a some dialogue.
Speaking of Jade, it seems that Boon is finding her fans a little too passionate. Later in the interview, he says that Jade is the "new Mileena", referring to the campaign to get Mileena in Mortal Kombat 11. Fans certainly took it too far back then, but Boon says that Jade stans
