While Immortan Joe might be one of the most fascinating Mad Max franchise villains, it is tough to tell how much the upcoming prequel Furiosa should delve into his backstory. Arriving in 2024, Furiosa will be the first spinoff of the Mad Max franchise. A prequel to 2015’s Fury Road, Furiosa tells the tale of how Charlize Theron’s instantly iconic anti-heroine ended up in the employ of the dictatorial warlord Immortan Joe.
Even before the prequel released its official synopsis, Furiosa’s casting of Tom Burke seemingly hinted at Immortan Joe’s return to screens. The official synopsis has since revealed that Immortan Joe will indeed play a role in the prequel, with a young Furiosa being stranded in a battle between him and a rival biker gang leader, Dementus. With Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role, Furiosa is set for a 2024 release.

Hemsworth can play villains well, as proven by 2022’s twisty sci-fi satire Spiderhead, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Furiosa should dwell on his version of Immortan Joe’s backstory as much as that of its titular heroine. The Fury Road villain is officially appearing in the prequel according to its synopsis, but whether Burke or Hemsworth's version of Immortan Joe will end up pulling focus from Furiosa in her movie remains to be seen.
