Samsung is reportedly moving towards heavily investing in GPUs as the company looks to establish a dominant position in the AI industry.
Korean media, Naver, reports that findings from the corporate governance report show that Samsung has set its sights on the GPU industry, as the firm aims to become self-subsistent in this sector.
While the report doesn't state Samsung's actual plan, it is said that the firm's "GPU Investment Proposal" was presented to top executives a few months ago in a board meeting, which included the likes of Han Jong-hee, head of the Device eXperience (DX) division along with several presidents of relevant divisions. Samsung looks to step up its game of graphics processing, but the investment might not go to the cause we all are thinking about.
Currently, Samsung's System LSI division is responsible for manufacturing the firm's GPUs in its Exynos chips, which feature AMD's RDNA architecture. The Korean giant hasn't presented an in-house solution yet, so the idea of working on a self-built GPU is justifiable here. However, the report suggests that Samsung's investment is an effort to uplift the firm's semiconductor services since the company plans to utilize its GPUs for internal infrastructure rather than sell them in the markets.
Samsung's effort is an attempt to establish itself as an AI-focused digital twin with NVIDIA, as both of them plan to develop the world's first automated semiconductor factory in 2030. With increasing complexities, the Korean giant's GPU investment will surely account for improved infrastructure for more potent data utilization, given the pace at which the semiconductor industry is growing. This indicates that Samsung's "AI computational" aims for the future and a commitment from the firm to
