In addition to announcing new Galaxy 6 Watches and Tab S9 tablets at its Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled its next-generation foldables, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5(Opens in a new window). The new phones follow closely in the footsteps of the Flip 4 and Fold 4, which means you again must choose between two drastically different designs (folding horizontally or flipping vertically).
But their differences go far past their folding mechanism. We cover all the important distinctions (and some similarities) below so that you can choose the best folding smartphone for your needs. We plan to conduct a full set of tests on each handset before they launch on Aug. 11, so stay tuned for our upcoming reviews. They are available for pre-order now.
Bigger usually means pricier, and folding phones are no exception. The smaller Z Flip 5 starts at $999.99, while the larger Z Fold 5 goes for almost twice as much at $1,799.99.
You can get the Flip 5 with either 256GB or 512GB of storage, but RAM stays at 8GB for both variants. The Z Fold 5 comes with either 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage, plus 12GB of RAM. Unlike the Galaxy Tab S9 tablets, neither phone has a microSD card slot for additional storage.
Both the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor, which launched alongside the Galaxy S23 series.
When it is folded, the Z Flip 5 measures just 3.35 by 2.83 by 0.59 inches (HWD). Unfolded, it's much larger at 6.50 by 2.83 by 0.27 inches. The phone is very easy to pocket and its 6.6-ounce weight keeps it very light.
The Z Fold 5 is almost as big folded as the Z Flip 5 is unfolded at 6.10 by 2.64 by 0.53 inches. And then, when you open it, the device expands to 6.10 by 5.11 by 0.24 inches.
