RuneScape launched back on January 4, 2001, meaning that today marks the game’s 23rd anniversary.
Spending hours exploring in Gielinor, searching for new shinies, and learning new skills has been going on since then. There are even some folks who have been around for all or nearly all that time. Dedicated community indeed. In fact, someone only recently finished collecting every drop from every single boss.
Community members shared the anniversary details on the RuneScape subreddit, with a classic promo that said the “Runescape beta is now online” and described what was in store for those who clicked the link at the bottom to play. Some reflected on their experience, and one even called for another “classic fresh server”.
With RuneScape and Old School RuneScape still running, and seeing some changes, improvements, and the wealth of traditions that have sprung up over the decades, there are no signs of stopping anytime soon.
In 2023, there were more visual upgrades, including to older free to access regions and more tweaks to improve performance. The big year was also marked, of course, with thefirst-ever new combat style, Necromancy. The year ended with an expanded Christmas holiday celebration and a combat beta by which the team intends to adapt some things they learned from developing Necromancy to improve combat across all styles.
Some wondered what Jagex might do when the 25th anniversary rolls around. Of course, they tagged a few Jagex employees about this and even got this from JagexDoom:
