Nintendo is likely to release a new console during the second half of 2024, according to a VGC report citing “multiple people with knowledge of Nintendo’s next-gen console.” Development kits are reportedly already with key partner studios.
The people said that the console would be able to be used in portable mode, similar to Nintendo’s current Switch.
Two sources suggested the console could launch with an LCD screen instead of an OLED screen to lower costs, which could balance out the higher amount of storage required for higher fidelity games.
Another source said the console will support physical games via a cartridge slot, such as the current Switch.
Details on features such as backwards compatibility support were unclear.
According to the sources, the release timing would ensure there is enough stock to avoid the manufacturing shortages previously faced by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
Update 10:30 a.m.: Eurogamer says its own sources also also a launch window for the next Nintendo console “in the latter half of 2024,” which will “remain playable in a handheld configuration.”
