It’s rumored that Sega has planned three more revivals, specifically for Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sakura Wars, and Panzer Dragoon. At The Game Awards 2023, Sega surprised fans with revivals of several classic IPs. These revivals are part of a new initiative by Sega to re-imagine these older properties and bring them to new audiences.
The games shown at Sega's TGA showcase were revivals for Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage. Some of these revivals were previously leaked through an alleged internal meeting video that contained the first footage of a new Jet Set Radio game, alongside early footage for games like Sonic Frontiers. There appear to be more games that have been greenlit since the initial TGA announcement.
According to Insider Gaming, there were 10 Sega games that were greenlit for production between 2020 and 2021, including the five games that had gameplay footage shown at The Game Awards 2023. Insider Gaming confirms that three of the five other Sega games that were put into production during that time, with the site’s sources stating that Panzer Dragoon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Sakura Wars would likely be making a comeback.
Panzer Dragoon is a cult classic rail shooter series that was first released on the Sega Saturn in 1995. The most recent entry would be the multi-platform Panzer Dragoon remake released in 2020, which received a mixed reaction. Sakura Wars is a tactical role-playing dating sim hybrid game that also debuted on the Sega Saturn. The most recent entry in this series is the 2019 soft reboot simply titled Sakura Wars.
